It’s cold\, dark for most of the year\, there aren’t enough jobs and the population is dwindling. The people who live there are obsessed with ice hockey and when junior team reach the national semifinals\, it’s the most exciting thing that’s happened in the town for years\, and the residents are full of pride and excitement. But then a crime is committed which threatens all of that\, and the recriminations affect the whole town. As his memories return\, he realizes he’s the last hope for Earth\, sent on a desperate interstellar mission to stop a mysterious cosmic threat. The story blends hard science fiction with humour and emotional depth. It features detailed problem-solving\, alien contact and a surprising alliance that challenges what it means to be human.
