DESCRIPTION:Saturday 2 May\, 10:00 am\nJardins les Sentiers de l’Abondance\nEygalieres\n\nSpring has now finally sprung in the gardens and there’s lots for us to do!  It’s so nice to see the new shoots and buds heralding another cycle of life. \nOur April meeting has been delayed until May 2\, because the Spartacus event is on our usual Saturday.  So on May 2nd we will be going to the Jardins les Sentiers de l’Abondance in Eygalieres to discover their organic Mediterranean planting using traditional techniques and irrigation\, respecting biodiversity. \nThey have made canals for irrigation originating from a natural water source and cultivated plants to suit the environment and accommodate the insects including bees. There are flowers all the way through from February to October. You can read more about it on their website: https://lessentiersdelabondance.com/ \nThere will be a guided tour in French starting at 10:00 am followed by a brunch. It describes the circumstances of William Shakespeare’s marriage with Agnes Hathaway (portrayed as a herbalist)\, the birth of their children and subsequent death of Hamnet\, potentially from bubonic plague\, which influenced Shakespeare’s subsequent writing in the tragedy of his play Hamlet. The story includes some of the known facts of Shakespeare’s life in the Tudor Period but also includes myths and other imagined fictions surrounding Hamnet’s death. She will talk about the local plants and will provide a few rampant rosemary plants. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 27 June\, 10:00 am\nJardin Ethnobotaniques de la Gardie\nChem. de Panissière\, 30340 Rousson \nThe end of June is our last meeting before the summer break and we usually have a bit of a party.  This year it will be a picnic party in an interesting garden. \nWe will be going to the Jardin Ethnobotaniques de la Gardie for a guided tour on June 27.  It is an interesting innovative conservation and cultural site which combines wild and cultivated plants and various aspect or rural heritage. There is a medieval kitchen garden with a variety of medicinal plants\, a Mediterranean garden\, an area of ancient cereals and a reconstructed bee hive as well as a charcoal area. It is run on a voluntary basis and is pretty unique at the base of the Cévennes mountains.  For more information\, please see their website:  https://jardinethno.fr/\n\nThe visit will start at 10:00am and after we can use their facilities for a picnic – everyone to bring something to eat and their own blankets.  There will be a small charge for this visit so watch out for the flyer. DESCRIPTION:Uzès Book Club\nTuesday 21 July\, 3:00pm\nAt a Member’s home the third Tuesday of the Month\n\nOur July book is ‘The Man in the Red Coat’\, by Julian Barnes. In the summer of 1885\, three Frenchmen arrived in London for a few days’ shopping. One was a Prince\, one was a Count\, and the third was a commoner\, who four years earlier had been the subject of one of John Singer Sargent’s greatest portraits. The commoner was Samuel Pozzi\, society doctor\, pioneer gynaecologist and free-thinker – a scientific man with a famously complicated private life. \nPozzi’s life played out against the backdrop of the Parisian Belle Epoque. The beautiful age of glamour and pleasure more often showed its ugly side: hysterical\, narcissistic\, decadent and violent\, with more parallels to our own age than we might imagine.The portrait around which this history is woven is a magnificent work from Sargent’s Paris period\, before he fled to London following the scandal created by another of his works – Madame X.  The member who suggested this book had been inspired by a trip to Paris last year to see an exhibition of Sargent’s Paris works\, including the portrait of Pozzi\, at the Musee d’Orsay. \n\n\n *************** \nBook club numbers are limited\, as we meet in members’ homes\, and unfortunately\, we currently have a waiting list.
