It covers the real-life\, gripping story of Rudolf Vrba\, who managed to escape from Auschwitz with detailed information to inform the world about what was happening there. \nMeticulously researched\, the novel shows how Vrba’s account was not believed\, nor acted upon\, by Churchill\, among many others\, and the effect this had on this remarkable man’s life. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 27 June\, 10:00 am\nJardin Ethnobotaniques de la Gardie\nChem. de Panissière\, 30340 Rousson \nThe end of June is our last meeting before the summer break and we usually have a bit of a party.  This year it will be a picnic party in an interesting garden. \nWe will be going to the Jardin Ethnobotaniques de la Gardie for a guided tour on June 27.  It is an interesting innovative conservation and cultural site which combines wild and cultivated plants and various aspect or rural heritage. There is a medieval kitchen garden with a variety of medicinal plants\, a Mediterranean garden\, an area of ancient cereals and a reconstructed bee hive as well as a charcoal area. It is run on a voluntary basis and is pretty unique at the base of the Cévennes mountains.  For more information\, please see their website:  https://jardinethno.fr/\n\nThe visit will start at 10:00am and after we can use their facilities for a picnic – everyone to bring something to eat and their own blankets.  There will be a small charge for this visit so watch out for the flyer. In the summer of 1885\, three Frenchmen arrived in London for a few days’ shopping. One was a Prince\, one was a Count\, and the third was a commoner\, who four years earlier had been the subject of one of John Singer Sargent’s greatest portraits. The commoner was Samuel Pozzi\, society doctor\, pioneer gynaecologist and free-thinker – a scientific man with a famously complicated private life. \nPozzi’s life played out against the backdrop of the Parisian Belle Epoque. The beautiful age of glamour and pleasure more often showed its ugly side: hysterical\, narcissistic\, decadent and violent\, with more parallels to our own age than we might imagine.The portrait around which this history is woven is a magnificent work from Sargent’s Paris period\, before he fled to London following the scandal created by another of his works – Madame X.  The member who suggested this book had been inspired by a trip to Paris last year to see an exhibition of Sargent’s Paris works\, including the portrait of Pozzi\, at the Musee d’Orsay. \n\n\n *************** \nBook club numbers are limited\, as we meet in members’ homes\, and unfortunately\, we currently have a waiting list.
